The challenge

Eighty years of history, no brand to carry it.

Sammy Powell opened Sammy's on Del Paso Boulevard in 1944, and it fed Old North Sacramento for decades. It was the kind of place where the coffee was always on and the regulars had their own seats. Then the pandemic closed it, and the corner went dark.

In 2024, Naz Begum and her mother Moon reopened it. They kept the name, tracked down the original recipes, and brought back cooks who'd worked there before. The mayor came to cut the ribbon.

What the diner didn't have was a brand it owned. No logo file in its own hands, no consistent colors or type, and almost nothing online. Eighty years of goodwill and nothing to carry it forward on.

What we did

Rebuilt from what was already on the building.

01

The logo, rebuilt from the sign

Sammy's had carried a few different marks over the years. The one over the front entrance was the best of them, so we rebuilt it from scratch into a proper, scalable file the restaurant owns outright.

02

Variations

Primary and secondary lockups, alternate colorways, so it works on a light menu and a dark sign without being redrawn each time.

03

Palette

Built from the diner's own teal, pink, and gold, with rules for where each one goes.

04

Type system

A four-tier system of title, subtitle, body, and accent, so a flyer and the website look related.

05

Brand board

A permanent reference document, handed over, so the identity holds no matter who touches it next.

06

Menu redesign

Rebuilt from scratch. Errors corrected, pricing current, new system applied.

07

Photography

Shot on location and handed over as files Sammy's owns and can reuse.

08

The website

Warm, mobile-first, built so someone can find the hours, the menu, and the address in about four seconds.

09

Local search

Site optimized and the Google Business Profile actively worked, because for a neighborhood diner that listing does more than the site does.

10

Hosting and upkeep

Ongoing, month to month.

The takeaway

Some brands you invent. This one was already on the front of the building. Earned, not manufactured.

Where it landed

A Sacramento institution, brought into focus.

Sammy's now owns a complete identity. Logo, palette, type, brand board, a redesigned menu, real photography, and a website that gives the neighborhood a straight answer about hours and food. All of it honors eight decades without pretending they were designed.

In 2025, readers of The Sacramento Bee voted Sammy's a Sacramento Favorite in three categories: Breakfast, Diner & Cafe, and Pancakes.

We host and maintain the site month to month and keep working on their local presence.
